Brenda Ueland (October 24, 1891 – March 5, 1985) was an American journalist, author, and writing teacher. Her best-known work is "If You Want to Write: A Book about Art, Independence and Spirit", published in 1938, which has since been reprinted many times. Her writing philosophy centered on the idea that everyone is born with creative genius and that writing is a way to unlock that genius. She argued that writing should be a joyful and life-enhancing activity, free from self-criticism and self-doubt, and that it should come from the heart rather than from the head. Ueland was also a political activist and a feminist who championed women's rights and equality. She was a lifelong resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she taught writing to many aspiring writers.
